FIgures speak for themselves:

1 out of 6 couples in age of having children (15%) has fertility problems *. This means that in our close circle, we all know at least one or several persons concerned.

– In 2014, at least 33.934 babies were born in Spain out of assisted reproduction techniques*.

– In 2014, 156.865 cycles of assisted reproduction were done in Spain (116.688 IVF, 40.177 artificial inseminations)*.

Louise Brown, the first test-tube baby, is not 38 years-old and a happy mother.

HOWEVER, THE SUBJECT IS STILL A TABOO.

We only hear the stories of those for whom “it worked at the very first time” –because the others simply don’t talk about it. When you face difficulties to have a child, it’s not so easy to open yourself about it, even to the people close to you, because it affects in your most intimate capacity: to give life. The fear of having to face the others’ embarrassment and failure to understand often leads people to isolate themselves and live the whole process in silence, and even in solitude. Silence generating silence, and nurturing the taboo.

Pregnancy and the birth of a child are among the most natural and beautiful things in this life. Why then should the struggle for maternity be kept silent and secret? Assisted reproduction processes are painful enough, physically as well as psychologically and emotionally. This solitude and this silence only make the situation more difficult to live.

TOGETHER we can and we must fight this taboo of infertility.

In order for everyone to be able to share freely their doubts and difficulties, without feeling isolated or ashamed.

So that the words “infertility” and “assisted reproduction” stop provoking embarrassment, awkwardness or shame.
